Is FiveThirtyEight Reliable?

Founded in March of 2008 by baseball analyst Nate Silver, FiveThirtyEight originally began as a polling aggregator, its name derived from the number of electors in the U.S. electoral college. Well known for its election predictions, it successfully predicted the outcomes of both presidential races in 2008 and 2012. Silver pioneered unique methods incorporating statistics and demographic data not used before. As the organization grew, it would go on to receive many awards as its focus broadened under the rubric of data journalism, but it received significant flak in 2016 and 2020 for projections that significantly diverged from electoral results. Today, over half of Americans indicate they are skeptical of polling. Given this mixed reputation, how reliable is FiveThirtyEight?

Is Ars Technica Biased?

Ars Technica — meaning “art of technology” — is the fitting name of a publication aimed at technology enthusiasts. A leading source for technology news, including technology policy, product launches, and the latest hardware and software, Ars Technica caters to a core readership, which they define as “Readers [who] have come to demand devotedness to accuracy and integrity, flanked by a willingness to leave each day’s meaningless, click-bait fodder by the wayside.” Given Ars Technica’s dedication to “accuracy and integrity,” The Factual asks: how factual are its articles and how biased is its content?

Is Foreign Policy Magazine Reliable?

Foreign Policy was established in 1970 by Samuel P. Huntington, a renowned political theorist and academic. Huntington wanted to provide alternative coverage outside of Washington’s “entrenched orthodoxies” during the Vietnam War. At the time, he characterized the paper as “serious but not scholarly, lively but not glib.” Since then, it has earned the respect of journalists and statesmen alike for its focus on current events, global affairs, and domestic and international policy, including six National Magazine Awards. In 2016, it broke with tradition by endorsing a presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, which to some signaled a liberal bias. So, how reliable is Foreign Policy as a news source and how biased is its content?

Is the American Spectator Reliable?

The American Spectator is a conservative magazine and website that grew in prominence in the 1990s publishing “political scandal” articles related to figures such as former President Bill Clinton and Clarence Thomas accuser Anita Hill. Today, the publication hosts conservative thinkers, respected and controversial alike, but is also the subject of considerable scrutiny. So, how reliable are news articles from the American Spectator?

Is the Daily Caller Reliable?

Correction: This article originally stated that The Daily Caller is run by the Daily Caller News Foundation, which is in fact a separate entity. The original article also suggested that the Daily Caller did not directly employ its own team of journalists, which is false.

The Daily Caller is an independent, for-profit news organization established in 2010 by conservative media personality Tucker Carlson. Today, the publication reaches 20 million unique monthly visitors and distributes news through official partners like MSN and Yahoo. However, the organization has faced controversy in the past following accusations that it exploits a legal loophole to avoid taxes through its relationship with the Daily Caller News Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) news organization. It has also drawn fire for publishing content that casts doubt on climate change. Given the site’s controversial background, how biased and factual is the Daily Caller?

The Factual has been acquired by Yahoo

When we started The Factual in 2019, we observed that the vast majority of Americans, and indeed people around the world, were frustrated with biased news that increasingly appealed to political extremes. We hypothesized that if people were presented with all the facts on news topics, they would trust the news more and reach logical conclusions on their own.

Since then we’ve built a community of thousands of readers all across the US, with subscribers in 3,000 zip-codes and in every state, that represent a wonderful cross-section of America—politically, economically, and culturally. And we’ve seen that the desire for trusted new sources is broad and deeply felt.

Today, I’m delighted to announce that Yahoo has acquired The Factual, which will allow us to bring credible news to millions of readers and have the kind of impact we always envisioned.

I’m particularly excited because of Yahoo’s management team’s commitment to provide its consumers with trusted information and the opportunity to be more informed about the content they consume. Yahoo’s brand is well positioned to deliver on this value and make the news more useful for everyone. This is a chance to see how The Factual’s technology, when applied to millions of users, can materially increase trust in the news. That was always the mission and this acquisition by Yahoo is the fastest path to accomplishing the mission.

For the near term, The Factual will continue to operate as is, while we explore how best to incorporate its features into Yahoo News. Ajoy Sojan, our CTO, and I will join Yahoo’s engineering and product teams in leadership roles.

There are many people to thank for helping us get to this point.

First and foremost, our readers. Your faith in The Factual, when we were only a newsletter (and a pretty rough one at that), was remarkably prescient. You read The Factual consistently, offered blunt and helpful criticism, and referred your friends and family to us, helping us grow rapidly. And then you supported us with a paid subscription that you renewed at a very high rate. Simply amazing. Thank you.

Next, our team. We have had the most remarkable people join the team, with an impressive set of complementary skills. The Factual has happy readers because of the care you took to refine every last detail. Thank you.

Finally, our investors. Over 20 angels and venture capitalists invested in us, many before we were even called The Factual. News is a tough sector for investors and yet you stepped up to support our idea. I am forever grateful for your support. Because of your bold investment, millions of people will now have access to news they can trust. Thank you.

We are in the early innings of rebuilding trust in the news. This next round at Yahoo promises to be the most exciting yet. I look forward to connecting with all of you there. Keep us honest as you’ve always done.

Media Trends in News Coverage on Abortion

Between January 1, 2021 and July 11, 2022, The Factual’s news-rating algorithm analyzed over 10,000 articles on abortion, tracking media trends during a momentous time for the abortion debate in the United States. The Factual’s data—which includes measurements of reliability and bias for individual news articles—is instructive in documenting how much is being published on the issue, who is publishing most often, and how the political bias of publishers may be influencing news coverage. Below, we unpack a series of trends in the coverage of abortion, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the future of abortion in America.

Media Trends in Coverage of January 6

The events of January 6, 2021—also known as 1/6 or the Capitol Riot—has returned to news coverage in force in recent weeks as a bipartisan House panel undertakes a series of hearings to paint a more complete picture of the day.

For many Democrats, these hearings have reiterated the deeply disturbing nature of the events that took place that day and shed light on the complicity of former President Trump. Indeed, the hearings have featured testimony from numerous Republicans that implicate the former president. Many Republicans, on the other hand, see only political motives in a continued investigation. In a recent YouGov poll, for example, 74% of Republican respondents thought that left-wing protesters orchestrated January 6 to try to make Trump look bad, though there is no evidence to support this theory.
